Abstract

This is a citizen-centered call for restoring trust, accountability, and ethical leadership within Nigeria's healthcare system. The book argues that while investments in infrastructure, workforce, medicines, and healthcare financing are essential, they cannot achieve sustainable improvements without integrity and public trust. Drawing on 173 real Patients' Lived Experiences (PLEs), it demonstrates how everyday interactions between patients and healthcare providers either strengthen or erode confidence in the health system.

The book identifies critical integrity challenges, including absenteeism, informal payments, poor communication, weak regulation, counterfeit or expired medicines, and unreliable health data, while recognizing the systemic pressures faced by healthcare workers. Through practical case studies, policy analysis, and evidence-based recommendations, it presents an integrity-first framework for reform that prioritizes transparency, accountability, patient dignity, fairness, and ethical governance.

Designed as both a reference and an action guide, the book provides practical tools for patients, healthcare professionals, facility managers, policymakers, regulators, development partners, and civil society to identify integrity gaps, strengthen accountability, and improve the quality of care. It proposes a Trust Renewal Agenda that empowers stakeholders to transform healthcare delivery through patient-centered reforms and responsible leadership.

Ultimately, Trust Renewal affirms that quality healthcare extends beyond infrastructure and clinical services. A resilient and equitable health system must be built on integrity, compassion, respect, and public trust, ensuring that every patient receives safe, dignified, and accountable care.
